About Us
The Greenbelt Community Foundation (GCF) is a fund within the Prince George's Community Foundation (PGCF), under the umbrella of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region (CFNCR). As such, the GCF resources, along with more than 500 other donor advised funds, are thoughtfully managed by CFNCR staff and investment professionals.
The Foundation was established to serve as a permanent endowment fund to support worthwhile projects in Greenbelt. Typically, foundations make 5% of their endowment funds available for grants. GCF makes 50% of donated funds (less expenses) available to be given out for grants with the remaining 50% invested to build the fund for the future.
Since the Greenbelt Community Foundation was established in June 2006, it has received over $170,000 in contributions from Greenbelt citizens, business owners and governmental organizations. To date, roughly $78,000 of this has been reinvested in the Greenbelt Community through grant awards. The GCF monitors the completion of funded projects and requires final reports from grantees.
GCF is directed by an Advisory Board that is responsible for proposal solicitation/review, community outreach, and fund raising. The guiding principles of the Greenbelt Community Foundation allow the volunteer board members to serve a maximum of 2 consecutive 2-year terms before rotating off of the Board.
The 2011-2012 Advisory Board consists of Dorrie Bates (Chair), Judy Bell, Jim Cohen, Jim Fischer (Secretary), Barbara Havekost, Austin Henry (Treasurer), Sandra Lange, Eulalie Lucas, Tom White.
